Need of the hour: Drug rehab centers in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

856 people will lose their lives to tobacco, while only 167 will succumb to alcoholism and 33 will die of illicit drugs and 32 will be eliminated because of driving under influence of alcohol. So that is roughly a good 1088 decrease in population. These are just estimated predictions based on the records of drug rehab centers in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

According to the same data provided by police and drug rehab centers in Milwaukee, Wisconsin 28,808 people in the city of Milwaukee are addicted to marijuana, 12,615 prefer prescription drugs, 4,720 bend over for cocaine, 2,142 like their hallucinogens , 1,203 enjoy their inhalants and only 267 go for heroin. Small numbers?  Add them all up a total of 49,755 people in the city are addicts, and this doesn’t include alcohol and tobacco. This is not a small number and not to be taken lightly.

Milwaukee is the largest city in Wisconsin, and the 26th most populated in the United States. Also it is the city which is worst effected by drug abuse in the state. Perhaps it is because of the size and population or maybe it is because the drug mafia has firm hold of the drug supply and distribution through street gangs. The situation is not pretty.

The Drugs

Cocaine is brought to the city by Mexican drug organizations who are the primary distributors. They use the African American and Hispanic Street gangs to control the retail distribution.  It is quite a thriving business.

¾ of the heroin related deaths in Wisconsin occur in Milwaukee. Due to the rising levels of purity of the drug (as high as 95%) the users prefer to snort it instead of injecting it. Southeast Asian heroin is quite popular and trafficked by Nigerian criminal groups. The 2.3kgs seized is the largest in history.

Methamphetamine or Meth travelled from Minnesota to Wisconsin aside from thee imports by Mexican sources. Meth related deaths on the rise (0 in 1997 and 44 in 2001, and increasing). 37lbs of meth seized from out of state parties is the largest quantity.

Marijuana still the most widely abused drug and the easiest to get. Mexican weed is very popular among the crowds (mostly teens and young adults). 60% of the criminals entering state prison test positive for weed.

Finally the rising popularity of club drugs (viz. ecstasy and LSD) among the youth and teens is a cause of worry. Because of the ‘cool’ quotient of these drugs, they attract the younger crowd causing serious problems in their future.

In the year 2001 alone the authorities seized 68.3kgs of cocaine, 2.8kgs of heroin, 16.8kgs of crystal meth and 5.2kgs of marijuana. That’s 93.1kgs of illicit drugs, can you imagine how many innocent lives they would claim? How many millions of dollars would be exchanged to distribute and sell them? This doesn’t even include the prescription drugs, perhaps because they are too easily available at pharmacies and online. One doesn’t need a long and drawn out selling plan for those. Though the drug mafia has its ways.
